Introduction to Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 Lens
The M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 is the first lens in
Olympus's 'PRO' lens line for Micro Four Thirds, and deliberated to match the
top end OM-D E-M1 and supports a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the
zoom range. It offers a 24-80mm equivalent range and also dust and freeze
proof. The lens barrel is made from brilliant quality plastics, with a shiny
finish and bayonet is metal with a rubber gasket to avoid the entrance of dust
and moisture into the camera body. In so far as size and handling is concerned
this lens is an ideal match for the Panasonic Lumix G6 camera body. Special
elements and coatings 1 spherical element, 1 dual-sided spherical element, 2 ED
glass elements, 2 HR glass elements, 1 EDA glass element, 1 HD glass element.
Performance:
The 12mm sharpness is already exceptional across the frame,
and there is only a minor perfection in clarity when stopped down one stop.
This outline is frequent at 18mm with brilliant sharpness being achieved
between maximum aperture and f/8. Zooming to 40mm results in a minor reduction
in sharpness at maximum aperture, even then performance is very good in the
centre of the frame and good towards the edges of the frame at f/2.8.
This lens appears to be mainly affected by diffraction at
small aperture settings, with a dramatic decrease in sharpness is visible at f/22.
Though this may not be an issue for several, those wishing to use small
apertures for longer exposures, might want to use a impartial density filter as
an alternative so that the lens can be kept closer to its optimum aperture
range.
Chromatic aberrations are fine controlled during the zoom
range. Between 12mm and 18mm limit only exceeds half a pixel width when stopped
down between f/11 and f/22. At 40mm fringing just exceeds three quarters of a
pixel width towards the edges of the frame at f/2.8, but even so, this low
level should be difficult to spot.
This lens gives wonderful sharpness through much of the zoom
range at maximum aperture and supports a strong, dust and splash proof assemble,
all though remaining compact and lightweight. The brilliant performance of this
lens will surely win it many fans that are for sure.
